Contractor Checklist
List of things you should review and ask your contractor:
License
- Is the contractor licensed?
- What kind of license do they have (state or county)?
- Is the license valid and in good standing?
- Who holds the license and do they legally qualify the company you are hiring?
Insurance
- Does the contractor have Worker’s Compensation and Liability Insurance?
Experience
- Does the contractor have at least five (5) years of experience specifically replacing windows and doors?
Installation
- Are the contractors installers subcontractors or are they on his direct payroll?
- If subcontractor, is the subcontractor licensed and fully insured?
- Is the installation a complete job?
- Do they replace rotten bucks?
- What do they do if a window sill is broken during installation?
- Will they charge additional for bucks or broken sills?
References
- Is the contractor able to provide you with at least three (3) references that you can contact?
Written Contract
- Will the contractor provide you with a written contract that details our all of the work that will be performed?
- Is the contractor’s license number on the written contract?
- Will the contract include any work that you expect after the job is complete?
- Does the contract detail out the payment plan?
Other Important Questions To Ask Your Contractor
- Is the contractor an authorized dealer for the products that are to be installed?
- Do they pull all required permits?
- How much do they charge for permitting?
- Is the contractor name on the permit the same contractor that you hired?
- Who is responsible for scheduling final permit inspection with the city?
- What kind of warranties are offered on the products and installation?
- What is the time period of any warranties?
- Do they service the products that they installed?
- How long has the contractor been in the business?
